Hey there, fellow tennis enthusiasts It’s your girl Mia Johnson-Carter here, living the dream in Miami. Today, I’m super excited to share with you a story that’s not just about tennis but also about resilience and determination. We all know that life on and off the court can be unpredictable, and this week, we saw just that with Diego Schwartzman.
Diego Schwartzman, the former world No. 8 and 2020 French Open semifinalist, recently experienced an unfortunate break ahead of his retirement. While practicing in Argentina, he discovered that his car had been burglarized. The thieves smashed the windows and made off with some of his belongings. This incident is particularly painful for Schwartzman since it happened in his home country and just months before his final tournament in Buenos Aires.
Schwartzman took to social media to share photos from the scene, writing in Spanish, “Get out of the court and everything stolen.” This isn’t the first time something like this has happened to him; two years ago, he was robbed during his appearance at the ATP 250 in Eastbourne. However, this case is more personal given its timing and location.
After having a tough 2023 season and seven consecutive defeats earlier this year, Schwartzman announced in May that he would be retiring next February on the clay courts of Buenos Aires. In his message, he paid tribute to tennis and vowed to give his best until his last tournament.
“Tennis ball, what can I say to you…? You made me run a lot, laugh, cry, travel and know many places. You gave me a lot and it’s time to move on to another stage. See you soon tennis, I’ll continue sweating until the last shot and working as a professional until the last point I’ll play on a tennis court, El Peque,” the 32-year-old said at the time.
Schwartzman’s last match was at the US Open, where he won three qualifying matches before losing to Gael Monfils in the first round.
